Hello, this is La Chica life.

La Chica Life started as a hashtag, to document our life as a newly married couple living in paradise after moving from San Francisco to Honolulu - dog and ten suitcases in tow. Now, many years later, our life includes a tiny human who has more personality and spunk than both parents combined.

Work, travel, have kids? We started this blog to prove that new parents can have it all! La Chica Life is a glimpse into our lives as we work hard, travel often, maintain a home, and stay active - all while raising a family. Join us in our journey!

Hilton Waikoloa Village - A Luxury Family Hotel in Big Island, Hawaii

Hilton Waikoloa Village - A Luxury Family Hotel in Big Island, Hawaii

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is a grand luxury family resort located in Kona, Hawai‘i. With 1,200 rooms, this resort is almost like a small town. It's so big that there are trams and water taxis to help shuttle guests from each of its three towers. My son loved the boat rides, but walking is actually pretty enjoyable as as you get to see the hotel's extensive art collection displayed throughout the property.

We usually stay at the Hilton Waikoloa when we plan to have a slow, relaxing weekend. This means staying in at the resort versus being out all day exploring the island. We've stayed in both the Makai Tower and the Palace Tower and loved both rooms. Photos below are from our most recent stay at the Palace Tower.  As a Platinum card member, I enjoyed the benefits of a complimentary Hilton Honors Gold Status - an oceanview room upgrade and free buffet breakfast (score!)

What we love: the large pool and the ocean-fed lagoon. The pool actually has a sandy section just for tiny tots, and the lagoon has water toys for rent that the entire family can enjoy. The water in the lagoon can be murky depending on the weather, but swim slowly as we've always seen green sea turtles while snorkeling. Don't be surprised if they swim right up to your face! Also Life-Approved: the Big Island buffet breakfast and dining at the Kamuela Provision Company (check out this view):

Date night at the water's edge while watching the sunset. Perfect.

What can be improved: the resort is pretty stroller-friendly, unless you're trying to get to the pool areas. There's a few bridges that require steps and trust me, it can be a pain to cross especially if you're carrying a stroller, beach stuff, and diaper bag! We also weren't impressed with the other restaurant options at the resort. You're much better off heading to Queen's Marketplace for lunch or dinner (a 3-minute drive or 15-minute walk).

Overall, I would recommend staying at the Hilton Waikoloa for at least two nights to full enjoy the property. Life tip: Hawai‘i residents can avail of kama‘aina specials - discounted rates just for locals! Also, staying at the Makai Tower will give you complimentary access to the Kohala Spa facilities (free for HHonors Gold, too!) So book your stay and take advantage of all that this family-friendly resort has to offer.
